The Departments of Housing and Dining Services, and Child Care Services comprise the Residential and Student Service cluster of Undergraduate Affairs. H&DS is a dynamic department whose mission is:
To provide a comprehensive residential, dining, and child care environment that complements the University's mission of teaching, research and public service. This commitment is accomplished through a coordinated program that values quality in all of the services that we provide to the campus community. Our mission is carried out with a commitment to staff excellence through diversity, the efficient use of resources and student input in the decision making process.

Housing and Dining Services and Child Care Services employ approximately 400 career employees, as well as a large number of students and part-time employees, in an environment that places a high value on professional and personal development. Our services include:

Single student housing for approximately 5,100 students
in seven residential complexes

Family and graduate student housing

Community housing assistance for students, staff, and faculty

Dining services within six residence halls

Commercial restaurants on campus

A catering program

A conference program that accommodates thousands of visitors each year

Child care services for students, faculty, and staff
Some of our most important achievements include:

Creating and sustaining a nationally recognized Residential Life Program

Providing in-room computer connections and state-of-the-art computer
and academic centers to enrich and enhance the academic success
of students living in campus residence halls

Providing an additional 1,000 student living accommodations in the last ten years

Operating one of the largest child care programs in the UC System

Managing the renovation of all high-rise residential complexes

Planning and managing for the replacement of Family Student Housing

The Department serves a number of audiences, but students are viewed as a primary focus. Housing and Dining Services and Child Care Services have a long tradition of encouraging strong student interaction, and involvement in the direction of the Department. This occurs through student advisory groups in capital projects, budget decisions, and service enhancements. This involvement is a key factor in meeting the Department's goal of providing contemporary, cost effective programs and services that enhance the student experience here at CAL.
