1. Who is eligible for your program?

Children of registered UC Berkeley students.

2. I am a Post Doctoral or a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley. Is my child eligible for your program ?

Our first priority is to serve children of UC undergraduate & graduate students. Post doc's and Visiting Scholars may only apply for Non-Subsidized (Full Fee) care. Since they are not registered students they are ineligible for Subsidized care.

3. What ages of children do you serve?

We serve children ages 3 mos - 7 years old as of the first day of regular child care in August.

4. Where can I apply?

Deadline for submitting applications is May 31 for Fall program and November 15 for Spring program. Applications received after those dates will be added to the eligibility list.

5. If I apply now, what are my chances of getting into the program?

The first thing to do is fill out an Application. Once the Application has been processed, we will be able to give you a better idea of your status on the Eligibility List (note it's not a Waiting List). If parents want more detailed information, someone from our office staff can give more detailed information, and check the size of the Eligibility List to give parents a sense of the number of applicants.

6. What does Eligibility List mean?

Subsidized Applications are prioritized according to the family's income and their family size. With this criteria established, Applications are then placed on the Eligibility List with the appropriate age group.

Please note: this process applies to Subsidized Applications only. Non-Subsidized (Full Fee) Applications are placed on a seperate Waiting List on a first come, first served basis.

7. If I'm not accepted now, will I have to re-apply for the next semester?

No, the application you file for the Fall semester will carry over and be valid through May (for the current academic year). You do, however, need to report changes which may occur during the year or if you want your application withdrawn from the Eligibility List. For subsidized families a new application must be completed each fall.

8. I want to apply for the center on campus how do I do that?

Applications are not taken for individual centers but for the Program in general. When space is available in your child's age group for which you are eligible, you will be notified.

9. I heard that there's a vacancy at "X" center. Can my child enroll there?

Anytime a vacancy occurs, the space is offered to the next eligible family on the Eligibility List. If they decline, the space is offered to the next family and so on until the vacancy has been filled.

10. I applied in June and didn't get accepted for child care, and my neighbor just applied last week and was offered child care. How come?

Again, the explanation of the Eligibility List vs. the Waiting List applies here.

11. I wasn't accepted for the Fall program and wonder what my chances are for the Spring?

There are very few spaces available in January for new families. We only accept new children if any families currently enrolled drop in December, creating vacancies. (Families enrolled in Fall generally remain for the academic year).

12. I am pregnant now may I submit an application now?

You should wait until the baby is born before filling out an application.

13. How much will I have to pay?

Fees are based on a sliding scale for UCB student families, from $0 to $1000/month for full time care (as of January '07). Fees are calculated according to gross monthly income and family size. Families without subsidies will be billed $1000/month for infants, $940/month for toddlers, and $775/month for preschool children.

14. My neighbor was accepted into your program, but I know that the mother isn't working or going to school. This is not fair. What about this?

We take careful review of the student / working status of all accepted families on a periodic basis to eliminate these abuses.

* Non subsidized applications are accepted year round.
