The 2006 EPA award winning Green Room, in the Unit 1 residence halls is designed to show students how they can affordably and easily live in a more sustainable lifestyle.
The Green Room is a demonstration of how students can reduce their impact on the environment through purchasing Energy Star and other source-friendly products, and rethinking their behavior and habits.
The goal of the Green Room is to create student awareness of green building design, energy and water conservation, recycling, and waste reduction through featuring Energy Star electronics and appliances, AE-rated lighting, eco-friendly personal care products, and offer more sustainable alternatives to the typical items commonly purchased by residential students.

Sustainability Weeks
During Fall and Spring semester Sustainability Week focuses on various aspects of sustainability, including water, energy, waste, consumption, hazardous wastes. Activities include tabling, workshops, programs and other forms of outreach.

Recycling in the Residence Halls
Housing Facilities has made recycling easy in the residence halls. We have collection areas for:
• glass, metal & plastic containers
• clean mixed paper
• used appliances
• cell phone batteries
• TVs and computer monitors
Soon we will expand our to include composting 'to-go' containers and pizza boxes in the halls.
End of Semester Move Out Program (Reuse)

Housing Facilities and Campus Recycling and Refuse Services (CRRS) work together with ReUse to recover recyclable cardboard and usable discarded class readers, appliances, clothing and housewares left by students when they leave for the summer. Readers and notebooks are recovered and redistributed to students the following semester.
Residence Halls Outreach Programs
Unit Residential Sustainability Education Coordinator Program (URSECs)
Each year Housing Facilities hires one student Unit Residential Sustainability Education Coordinators (USECs) at each unit, who organize volunteer assistants (RSECs) and educate their fellow residents about waste reduction, recycling, re-use and environmentally sustainable practices.
Residential Sustainability Education Coordinator Program (RSECs)
Is a peer-to-peer sustainable living outreach program, where residence hall students volunteer to be sustainability experts for their residence halls and act as a resource for their hall residents.

Water Conservation
Housing facilities has installed low-flow faucet aerators & showerheads that restrict water flow in an effort to conserve of water.
Fact: Most residence hall students use on the average of 80 gallons of water a day (at least half of which occurs in the shower).
Energy Conservation
Housing Facilities has implemented several energy-saving measures to conserve energy & reduce utility costs, such as installing lightbulbs & ballasts that meet or exceed Title 24 Federal lighting requirements; and installing Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and local thermostatic controllers on gas heat boilers.
Compact Fluorescent Lightbulb Exchange Program (CFLs)
In collaboration with the USEC and the Green Campus Programs, Housing Facilities facilitates a light bulb exchange program. Each resident can trade an incandescent light bulb for a compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) for their personal desk lamps.
Fact: By replacing one incandescent light bulb with an energy-saving CFL means 1,000 pounds less carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere, and $67 dollars is saved on energy costs over the bulb's lifetime.

The Global Environment Residential
Theme Program |
The Global Environment Residential Theme Program (GET) provides a living and learning environment at the Foothill Residence Hall for students interested in social, economic and scientific issues affecting our Earth’s urban, rural and global environment. The goal of the program is to bring students and faculty together in a variety of structured and informal ways to explore issues such as:
• global environmental change
• policy and management of natural resources
• sustainable rural and urban environments
• environmental leadership.
The program provides students and faculty with a forum to exchange ideas, challenge each other's thinking, and share experiences about a variety of topics in small group settings. GET students are part of a smaller and closer community of 20 Global Environment House residents and the teaching and advising faculty who dedicate their time to the program.
Residents will receive specialized advising and mentoring to assist them in their academic career at UC Berkeley and beyond.

| ‘Green Buildings’ and LEED |
RSSP’s newly-constructed apartments and residence halls have incorporated a number of “Green Building” features determined by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
Some of the features include the use of:
• Increased insulation in attic & walls
• double insulated e-rated windows
• paints & finishes with low VOC ratings
• reclaimed wood timbers for exterior wood members.
The new residence hall buildings at Units 1 & 2 have been submitted for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) ‘Silver’ Certification. If approved, these would be the first University residence halls to qualify for LEED certification.
