Welcome to Maximino “Max” Martinez Commons!

Dear Maximino “Max” Martinez Commons Resident,

On behalf of all of the staff, we would like to welcome you to our community. We hope that you have been enjoying your summer and are excited about living here. To help facilitate your transition, this letter briefly describes how you can access information about your roommate(s), the check-in process, and how to find out more about living in Maximino “Max” Martinez Commons and the sophomore & upper division experience!

Please check the sidebar of this letter to find out your building placement and the contact information for your future roommate(s) in the beginning of August. When the information is available it will be a live link.

You will be able to check into your room on Sunday, August 25, 2013. Martinez Commons will not be open for check in on Saturday, August 24th. Please arrive between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm on Sunday, August 25th, when our Residential Staff will be available to assist you. Street parking is limited, so be prepared to unload quickly and move your car. Although we do not have movers to help you carry your possessions, we will have limited handcarts available to check-out for a short period of time. Please understand that the waiting time for these carts can be significant. You may want to bring other helpers and a hand-truck if you have one, to assist you with your move. Generally, the more self-sufficient you are, the easier a time you will have with your move-in experience.

If you have chosen to live in an apartment, you will be assigned to a specific bedroom number. If you are living in the residence hall style portion of the building, we strongly encourage you to select your bed only after your roommate has arrived and you have discussed it amongst yourselves. Making this joint decision can help you establish a respectful relationship from the very beginning. Also you will be completing a roommate agreement within the first two weeks, which will help you to establish expectations with your roommate(s).

You will be asked to provide information about yourself and who to contact in case of emergency. This information is confidential and will only be used by your Resident Director and/or the Registrar's Office in the event of an emergency. Also, in order to receive important reminders from Cal, you should now update your email address on the Bear Facts website at http://bearfacts.berkeley.edu.

The staff at Maximino “Max” Martinez Commons will work hard to create and maintain a safe, clean, and enjoyable community; promoting healthy academic, personal, and social growth throughout the year. We are available to answer any questions you may have and to point you in the right direction. We also have several programs and events planned to enhance your knowledge of campus and the city of Berkeley. We will also be providing academic and social experiences that are specifically tailored to your needs as an upper division student. We strongly encourage you to attend as many events as you can to help you continue to build connections with other students. Be sure to check out the events for the Martinez Common’s Welcome Back Days from August 25 to 31.

If you have questions regarding your housing assignment, you can contact Cal Housing Assignments Office at (510) 642-4108. If you have questions about move-in day, please look through the move-in day website or call the Move-In-Day Help Line at (510) 642-3213. We are all looking forward to the 2012-2013 school year!

Congratulations on your decision to live in our residence halls at the University of California, Berkeley. We hope that you will find your new home as welcoming and exciting as we do. We look forward to meeting you!

Important To Do List

Please go to these links below for important information you need to know

link PLEASE DON'T ARRIVE EARLY BEFORE YOUR CHECK-IN STARTS

Our staff will not check in students before 10 am. We know there is a temptation to come early and "beat the rush." We would like to discourage this practice because of the lack of parking. Please come on time and work with our move-in staff and the UC police department. Check-in will go smoothly if we all work together.

Keep in mind that whether you are living in a double or triple, choosing your space in the room should be a negotiated conversation with your roommate(s), not on a "first come first serve" basis. During the first few weeks, RAs will be working with all students to complete roommate agreements and enhance opportunities for good communication and cooperation. We encourage you to begin conversations with your roommate(s) prior to your arrival.

See "Living with a roommate".
