Welcome to Unit 3!
Dear Unit 3 Resident,

We are excited about your stay with us at Unit 3-Is the Place to Be! Our Community consists of Beverly Cleary, Ida Sproul, Norton, Priestley, and Spens-Black Halls. We also house two great theme programs Casa Magdelena Mora and Unity House. If you have had a chance to visit the University of California at Berkeley campus, you know that Unit 3 Residence Halls are located in the hub of activity on the south side of the campus.

To ensure that the 2013-2014 Academic year is an amazing experience and with a little help from us, you will have the opportunity to explore your new world- and although it will be filled with many uncertainties it will have even more possibilities. A few things you can count on, though, are studying hard, having fun, meeting great people, and learning about yourself.

The Unit 3 staff will be working hard to help create and maintain a safe, clean, and enjoyable community; promoting healthy academic, personal, and social growth throughout the year. One thing that you can be sure of when entering Unit 3, is that you will be encouraged to become active in your community. In addition to the many campus organizations, there are many opportunities in the residence halls for you to gain leadership experience. You will learn more about them, (i.e. Hall Association, Peer Review Judicial Board, etc.) during Welcome Days.

Welcome Activities (Aug 24th-30th) are designed to ensure that you experience a smooth transition to Cal and will showcase many of the available campus and community resources. In addition, there are many activities that will help you to get acclimated to your new home in the Bay Area. The Unit 3 Staff has already begun planning activities such as trips San Francisco and Oakland, sporting events, musicals, café and dining hall hopping and, of course, shopping. You will receive more information and a schedule of events upon your arrival.

You will be asked to provide information about yourself and who to contact in case of emergency. This information is confidential and will only be used by your Resident Director and/or the Registrar’s Office in the event of an emergency. Also, in order to receive important reminders from Cal, you should now update your email address on the Bear Facts website at bearfacts.berkeley.edu.

We recognize that for many students the thought of sharing a room may result in some reservations, but we ask you to have an open mind. “Cohabitation” is fun, and there is much to be learned about yourself and others. Having a positive relationship with your roommate(s), or floor mates will add to the richness of your year. It is a proven fact that when you feel at home in your residence, you can be a better student and better able to positively contribute to your living community as well as the greater university community. So come prepared to enjoy your “live-in” experience.

You will be able to check into your room on Saturday, Aug. 24th, 2013, if you live in a triple. Please arrive between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., when our Residential Staff will be available to assist you. Street parking is limited, so be prepared to unload quickly and move your car. Staff will be located throughout Unit 3 to help your move run smoothly. Although we do not have movers to help you carry your possessions, we will have handcarts available to checkout for a short period of time. Please understand that the waiting time for these carts can be significant. You may want to bring other family members and a hand-truck if you have one, to assist you with your move. Generally, the more self-sufficient you are, the easier a time you will have with your move-in experience.

If you have questions regarding your housing assignment, you can contact Cal Housing Assignments Office at (510) 642-4108. If you have questions about move-in day, please look through the move-in day web site or call the Move-In-Day Help Line at (510) 642-3213. We hope that you enjoy the rest of your summer and have a safe trip to Cal.
Congratulations on your decision to live in our residence halls at one of the best universities in the world. We hope that you will find your new home as welcoming and exciting as we do and we look forward to exploring this new journey with you!

Important To Do List

Please go to these links below for important information you need to know

link PLEASE DON'T ARRIVE EARLY BEFORE YOUR CHECK-IN STARTS

Our staff will not check in students before 10 am. We know there is a temptation to come early and "beat the rush." We would like to discourage this practice because of the lack of parking. Please come on time and work with our move-in staff and the UC police department. Check-in will go smoothly if we all work together.

Keep in mind that whether you are living in a double or triple, choosing your space in the room should be a negotiated conversation with your roommate(s), not on a "first come first serve" basis. During the first few weeks, RAs will be working with all students to complete roommate agreements and enhance opportunities for good communication and cooperation. We encourage you to begin conversations with your roommate(s) prior to your arrival.

See "Living with a roommate".
