Amy, a freshman, is from New Haven, CT. She is studying architecture at Berkeley. In her free time, she enjoys swimming at the RSF and attending Friday instructional yoga classes. As Amy leads an active life, she really likes Unit 1's close proximity to the fire trails. |
Q: What was your first impression of Unit 1?
A: Moving into the residence halls was a completely new experience for me. Initially, I felt intimidated by the idea of living on a co-ed floor with 30 other people. After hanging out with everyone during Welcome Week, my room truly became home. Unit 1 rooms have these great ceiling high bulletin boards that residents can pin things to; my roommate and I decorated our walls with posters and magazine clippings, which helped make the atmosphere a lot cozier.
Q: Is it really different from living at home?
A: Where do I begin? What I don't have at home is a huge lounge with a big-screen TV and pool tables! My floormates and I like to go down there to relax on the couches or watch Cal away games on the flat-screen. Otherwise, we can watch rented movies from this place next to the mailroom at the Academic Center. Residents are really good with sharing, so sometimes other students will join us, which I think is a great way to meet new people freshman year.
Q: What places are within a ten minute walk from your building?
A: One of my favorite things about Unit 1 is how close it is to everything. As an architecture major, Unit 1 is the closest to Wurster, the building where I'm going to spend a great deal of time during my college career. Wurster is also home to Ramona's, my favorite on-campus restaurant. The paninis are incredible there!
Q: What else can you find nearby?
A: Berkeley has some really amazing places to eat, especially on a college student's budget. When I'm in a hurry, the Durant Food Court or La Burrita are my first options, as they're just down the street from Unit 1. My favorite sit-down restaurant is not even one block away—everyone should try the fried ice cream at the Thai House on Channing. I just cross the street to get to Caffe Strada, a coffee house located literally across from campus, which is beautiful at night when they turn on the lights in the trees.
