Residence Halls Student Life Quick Links

Life at Stern
Connie is a freshman from Singapore. As an international student, she loves Berkeley because of the diverse student body. In her free time, Connie studies at the International House and competes with Berkeley's Model UN team. She is going to apply to the economics and development studies majors next year.

Q: What makes Stern different from the other residence halls?
A: Stern has the most beautiful view of the Bay and the Campanile. The atmosphere is really quiet and relaxing. At first, Stern reminded me of an underground launderette; however, soon enough, I began to appreciate the spaciousness and the peacefulness. I especially like the fact that Stern and Bowles boast unique traditions, which other residence halls don't have. In addition to the annual Stern/Bowles dance, Bowlesmen come over and serenade the Stern ladies every Thursday night.

Q: What do residents do in their spare time?
A: On warm and sunny days, the Stern deck is great for sunbathing or reading. Inside, we have a really comfortable lounge complete with ping-pong tables and a grand piano; a lot of residents play the piano, which adds to the laid-back atmosphere at Stern.

Q: What type of room do you live in? Who do you share the bathroom with?
A: I live in a triple-room, which is larger than a double-room in the high-rise buildings at Units 1 and 2. My floor shares a bathroom, and guys have to announce themselves before entering. Generally the bathroom is pretty clean, unless the girls forget to tidy up after themselves.

Q: What places are within a ten minute walk from Stern?
A: Stern is really close to all the shops and restaurants on Northside, like Copy Central, La Burrita, Top Dog, and Bongo Burger. It's super easy to get to the I-House, Greek Theatre, Foothill, Memorial Stadium, and the academic buildings around Pimentel. To get to places that are farther away, there are several buses that stop near Stern, and I usually take the 52L, F, or Reverse Perimeter to go to classes or restaurants on Southside.
