Unit Description
The renovated Unit 3 complex includes four highrise halls surrounding a large courtyard and a central commons building that houses the dining center, main office, recreation lounge, and the Academic Center. Beverly Cleary Hallf is located on across the street on Channing.

Unit 3

History of Unit 3

The Unit 3 buildings were originally built in 1964, with buildings designed around a central dining hall, mail room, and recreational center. Unit 3 was recently renovated in 2000. Cafe 3, the dining hall, re-opened in the spring of 2007.

Significance of Names

Beverly Cleary graduated with a BA in English from Berkeley in 1938. She went on to become a prominent author of children's books, most notably the Henry Huggins series and Ramona books.
William J. Norton, Class of 1914, served as the campus business manager from 1941 - 1954. He was a member of the ASUC Finance Committee and a great housing advocate.
Kenneth J. Priestley, Class of 1926, was editor of the Daily Californian during his undergraduate studies at Berkeley. He was Business Manager of the Radiation Laboratory in World War II.
Sally M. Spens-Black promoted student welfare and believed that worthy students should not be denied University housing. She donated over $550,000 to help build residence halls.
Ida W. Sproul was First Lady of the University from 1903 - 1958. She was elected an honorary member of all the women's student organizations on campus, due to her abiding interest in student activities and welfare.
