Welcome to the Clark Kerr Campus
The Clark Kerr Campus, formerly the California Schools for the Deaf and the Blind was acquired by the University in 1982. At this time extensive renovations took place to turn the complex into a new housing facility for 800 University students, with a spacious and convenient conference center. The lovely Spanish-style buildings that now occupy the site were built during the 1920's through the 1940's. The stone wall surrounding the complex is from the original 1869 building destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. The complex is a registered state and national landmark.

In November 1986, the complex was dedicated to Dr. Clark Kerr who served as Berkeley's first Chancellor from 1952 to 1958 and President of the University of California from 1958 to 1967.

The Clark Kerr Campus offers single, double and triple rooms sharing a common area bathroom and lounge space. One of these residence hall rooms are recommended for a person looking for a more social and active atmosphere.

In addition, Clark Kerr Campus is the home of a variety of suite living accommodations. A typical suite includes a private bathroom, living area and in some cases a kitchenette area shared by 4 - 7 people. Many people enjoy the spacious and generally more quiet atmosphere of suite style living.

Programs and Events - What's Happening When And Where?

The hall staff at Clark Kerr develops and coordinates approximately 80 academic, social and cultural programs a semester. They range form a midterm autopsy and faculty fireside chats, to skin care and makeovers for men and women, and safe sex programs. These programs allow residents an opportunity to educate and develop themselves outside of the classroom setting. In addition, the health workers and hall associations also coordinate many activities and programs for CKC. Click here for a list of Programs and Events.

Leadership Opportunities at Clark Kerr

Hall Associations
The Clark Kerr Campus has four Hall Associations made up of student leaders in the North, South, East, and West areas. An executive board comprised of a President, Executive vice-president, Social Vice President, Treasurer, Residence Hall Association Representative, and Co-Board representative are elected each semester. Additional leadership opportunities exist by becoming involved as a floor or suite representative. Together, the student leaders in each area provide a myriad of social, educational, recreational and fun programming and activities for students. Becoming involved with the Hall Association is a tremendous opportunity to develop and fine-tune leadership skills and to positively contribute to your community.

Co-Board
Co-Board is comprised of student co-board representatives and the presidents of the four hall associations at Clark Kerr. They actively plan and create many large scale events for Clark Kerr residents. In the fall semester, they hosted a luau in collaboration with Dining Services. CKC residents feasted on Polynesian food and were entertained by the band and dancers from Spirit of Polynesia. During the spring, the Co-Board traditionally sponsors the annual CKC ski trip and the boat dance. Last year, forty-seven residents of CKC, new and experienced skiers and snowboarders, enjoyed a one day getaway on the slopes of Kirkwood Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe. Last April, CKC residents sailed away on the bay on a Commodore Cruises dining yacht. This boat dance was a joint effort with the residents of Unit 3. Lastly, the CKC Co-Board has sponsored a CKC T-shirt contest. The winning design was displayed on all the T-shirts of CKC residents.

Volunteer Tutors
The tutor program is a fun, and a great way to get involved, right where you live.
As a volunteer you spend one hour per week tutoring in the subject of your choice. Tutors also get special training and attend meetings to talk with other volunteers.

Student Orientation Staff
You can expect to be greeted by a SOS member upon check-in during August. Each Unit depends upon returning residents to form the Student Orientation Staff (SOS) to help design and initiate programs and activities at move-in time in the fall. SOS members assist the hall staff in the coordination of events which are intended to welcome students to the residence halls and assist them in becoming familiar with their new environment.

Peer Review Board
Peer Review Board is a student leadership group of 8-10 students who hear cases of policy violations affecting the community. The board meets on weekly basis and is led by a rotating chairperson. They critically analyze the incident report and discuss the report with the student. With the information provided by the student and the report, they decide if a student is responsible or not responsible for a policy violation and if appropriate, assigns a creative, community based sanction.

Security at Clark Kerr

CKC's safety and security program is spearheaded by a student security coordinator and approximately 22 student security monitors. In addition to roving the grounds and halls of Clark Kerr Campus every evening between the hours of 10pm -2am, the security program maintains an information and security desk at Building One. The desk holds a wealth of information; resource guides are available for students to browse through everything from Recreational Sports to cable TV information. Security monitors can also provide phone numbers and information on public transportation. The Security Monitor desk number is 643-9319.

Student Comments About CKC

"I like the spacious rooms and the peaceful quiet of building 11."

"It's definitely home."

"CKC has a beautiful environment. You can walk out of Building 2 on a sunny day and play Frisbee at the horseshoe. The rooms are large and the people are friendly. I like living here."

"Clark Kerr wasn't even one of my choices for housing last year. It just seemed so, so far away. However, living in Clark Kerr North has changed all that. I remember moving in the first day and being a little scared and annoyed that my parents were taking so long to leave. The transition was a lot easier than I expected because of the RAs. They introduced themselves right away. I have many fond memories of these eight months here at CKC North. My new best friends all live here and I am grateful to an environment that allows you to foster friendships and meet many, fun loving & interesting people."

Theme Dinners

The theme dinner program is a new component to the many programs and events at Clark Kerr Campus. In collaboration with the Clark Kerr Dining Services, the theme dinners give residents an opportunity to celebrate cultural holidays and events such as Chinese New Year in January, Black History Month in February, St. Patrick's Day in March and Cinco de Mayo in May. Dining Services creates a special menu of food to allow residents to sample and taste the culinary cuisines of other cultures. Decorations and information about the holiday and culture is displayed around the Dining Commons for residents to read and learn. Entertainment is a part of some of the theme dinners. During the celebration of Black History Month, music, dancing and poetry reading were performed by a band composed of students from Cal campus.
