At Unit 4 (Foothill Student Housing, Bowles Hall, and Stern Hall) we have a variety of programs occurring constantly throughout the year. Residents at Unit 4 are offered a wide range of experiences which include sports-related events, health conscious awareness workshops, cultural events, and academic support programs. Residence hall staff (Residence Assistants, Program Assistants, Security Coordinators) and Hall Association members (student residential leaders) take the lead to create these programs for the residents in their communities.

Unit 4 is located at the northeast corner of campus, offering stunning views of the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the East Bay. It is in a natural setting with large trees and is close to Campus buildings that contain sciences, computer studies, economics, the Greek Theater, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and Tilden Park. Within the complex is an Academic Center with 24 Macintosh and PC computers, laser printers, and a scanner. The Academic Center also provides academic support and tutoring programs.

Foothill

Foothill, built in 1990, is the newest residence hall complex on campus. Its wood-shingled buildings, surrounded by tall trees, provide a comfortable living environment. The complex overlooks courtyards, provides views of the Bay and the city of Berkeley, and is located in a quiet neighborhood. The spacious rooms are available as singles, doubles, or triples and are organized as suites that vary from two to 11 rooms each. The rooms are carpeted and contain extra long twin beds, dressers, desks, mirrors, shelving, closets, and direct Internet connections. Each suite has a shared living room and can be accessed only by those who live there. Foothill also provides single-sex suites with one shared bathroom as well as coed suites with two single sex bathrooms.

Other facilities include study spaces, a dining center with high ceilings and redwood finishes, a commons building, large assembly rooms for special events, TV lounges, and laundry facilities. The Foothill community consists of 770 students who have historically created very active hall government associations.

Bowles Hall

Bowles Hall, the University's first residence, is an all male hall. It is known for its Gothic, tudor-style architecture and is located right next to the University's California Memorial Stadium. Bowles houses 198 men, many of whom continue to foster the traditions and comradery that have lived on during its 69-year history. The Bowles Alumni Association helps to connect current residents with former residents, allowing for good networking opportunities.

As for the living areas, the building consists of quad rooms, which have one double occupancy room with two adjoining side single rooms. Each of the rooms have extra long twin beds, desks, dressers, mirrors, shelving, closets, centrally-located shared bathrooms, and direct Internet connections. Bowles also has a library, TV lounge, recreation room, sauna, its own dining center, laundry facilities, and football /soccer field. The hall association meetings are entertaining and productive and are the source of yearly events like the Halloween party, Luau, and the senior dinner.

Stern Hall

Stern Hall is Cal's all female hall and houses 250 women. It, too, has strong traditions that extend back to its founding more than 50 years ago. The Stern Alumni Association puts on a Career Day event in which current residents get to network with former Stern residents. Many rooms provide the residents with beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay as well as a quiet study environment. Stern also has a security program where a monitor at the front door checks the identification of all residents and guests.

The building consists of single and double rooms as well as rooms in suites. The rooms are carpeted and have long twin beds, desks, dressers, mirrors, shelving, closets, and direct Internet connections. There is a large main lounge with a fireplace and baby grand piano. Stern residents have their meals in the adjoining Foothill Dining Center.

Residence hall staff are Cal community members who are selected and trained with their main purpose being to foster a positive living environment in the residence halls. Hall Association members are residents from the community who are elected by their peers to assist in maintaining the same positive environment in the residences.

Programs and Events - What's Happening When And Where?

The hall staff at Unit 4 develops and coordinates approximately 80 academic, social and cultural programs a semester. They range from common classes and faculty dinners, to Asian cultural nights, ski trips to Lake Tahoe, and safe sex instruction. These programs allow residents an opportunity to educate and develop themselves outside of the classroom setting. In addition, the health workers and hall association members also coordinate many activities and programs for Unit 4.

Leadership Opportunities at Unit 1:

Hall Associations
Hall Association members work hard to reach out to residents to create a positive living community. Some of the programs from the Unit 4 Hall Associations include: Bake-O-Rama, Broomball, Finals Packets, Environmental Jeopardy, Murder Mystery, Movie Nights (various themes), Men and Women's Octet, Winter Religious / Multicultural Celebrations, Ultimate Frisbee, Community Service (working with various organizations, i.e. Senior Centers), a wide variety of Tournaments (pool, ping-pong, etc.), and munchie nights, a Ski-Trip to Kirkwood Ski Resort, and the Cal Football team coming to Unit 4 so residents could discuss the "Big Game", take pictures, and sign autographs. This was a pre-Big Game event where school spirit was generated.

Volunteer Tutors
The tutor program is fun, and a great way to get involved, right where you live. As a volunteer you spend one hour per week tutoring in the subject of your choice. Tutors also get special training and attend meetings to share experiences with other volunteers.

Student Orientation Staff
You can expect to be greeted by a Student Orientation Staff member upon check-in during August. Each Unit depends upon returning residents to form the SOS to help design and initiate programs and activities at move-in time in the fall. SOS members assist the hall staff in the coordination of events which are intended to welcome students to the residence halls and assist them in becoming familiar with their new environment.

Peer Review Board
Peer Review Board is a student leadership group of 8-10 students who hear cases of policy violations affecting the community. The board meets on weekly basis and is led by a rotating chairperson. They critically analyze an incident report and discuss the report with the resident. With the information provided by the student and the report, they decide if a student is responsible or not responsible for a policy violation and, if appropriate, assigns a creative, community-based sanction.

CKC Academic Center

Security at Unit 4:

Unit 4's safety and security program is spearheaded by four Security Coordinators and approximately 50 student Security Monitors. The security program maintains an information and security desk at each of the four buildings. The desk holds a wealth of information: resource guides are available for students to browse through everything from Recreational Sports to cable TV information. Security Monitors can also provide phone numbers and information on public transportation.

Special Programming:

There are also special programming events at Unit 4. Past events have included the Faculty Dinner, where 30 professors came and ate dinner with residents and created an environment where residents felt comfortable discussing academic topics and personal subjects. Many students commented that they appreciated the opportunity to meet the faculty and have a great dinner too. The event was semi-formal and included an incredibly delicious dinner presented by the Foothill / Stern Dining Hall staff. A Bowles Hall special event was the Anniversary Celebration which included a Swing Band and a Swing dance competition in the Bowles dining commona. A casino was set up in the main lounge and "mocktails" were served throughout the night. The dance was semi-formal attire.
