| Cal Student Orientation (CalSO) Counselor | How and When to Apply |
| Being a CalSO counselor is a commitment to helping new undergraduates and their families with their transition to Berkeley. CalSO counselors are hired each fall and participate in extensive training to prepare for the summer orientation season. Training includes an overnight retreat in January, a weekly training class during the spring semester, field training assignments in April, and an intensive two-week boot camp immediately following finals. Counselors lead and facilitate small groups of new students or their guests during orientation programs in June and July; listen to and address student and guest concerns; explain University procedures and policies; make presentations in front of large groups; and do some administrative support work like answer phones and assist with program check-in. Counselors also have the option of helping out with programs during Welcome Week and throughout the school year. Compensation includes a stipend, and room and board during the summer orientation period as well as other goodies and CalSO swag. | |
| Apartment Assistant (formerly Graduate Resident Assistant) | How and When to Apply |
| Under the supervision of a Resident Director, the Apartment Assistant has responsibility for the oversight of a student apartment building. In addition, the Apartment Assistant oversees the following areas in their respective apartment building: community development, administration (including check-in and check-out and participation in an on-call rotation), and programming, as well as providing support to students in the area of counseling and crisis management. The Apartment Assistant also works closely with all of The Office of Student Development staff and the Housing Assignments Office. With all these varying roles and responsibilities, flexibility is required from the individual in this position. The Apartment Assistant will administer and enforce policies and procedures, is to serve as a resource to both residents and staff and shall uphold the goals of Residential and Student Service Programs. | |
| Tutors | How and When to Apply |
| Tutors provide drop-in
tutorial services for students living in UC Berkeley's Residence Halls.
During regularly scheduled evening shifts, a team of Tutors
assist residents with their coursework and academic assignments, provide
study tips and short cuts, and promote student success. Most tutors work
in one of the following five subject areas: chemistry, mathematics, physics,
statistics/economics, or writing. Tutors may be hired in other subject
areas depending on need within specific units. Tutors are responsible
for understanding and tutoring a subject area, not just one or two classes.
At the beginning of the fall semester, tutors are required to present
a program within their discipline area (i.e., "How to Survive Chemistry
1A"), and throughout the year tutors conduct midterm and final exam
reviews and other programs as necessary. Work hours: At least 4 hours per week. Pay rate: $12.44 per hour |

| Peer Advisors | How and When to Apply |
| ResHall Peer Advisors are an indispensable part of
the Academic Center. Working directly with and supervised by the Academic
Program Coordinator, the PeerAds hired at each Unit provide general information
to undergraduate residence hall students regarding university and college
requirements and procedures; offer career and graduate school information
to residents; and organize academic and career-related programs. Work hours: No more than 6 hours per week. Pay rate: $9.49 per hour |

prepare advertising that promotes the Center, and lead both group and
1-on-1 tutorials on basic software applications.

| ResHall Peer Advising Supervisor is an essential part of the Academic
Services Centers. Working directly with ResHall Peer Advisors and

| The Theme Program Advisor (TPA) is responsible for developing and
maintaining an atmosphere that promotes residential communities through
excellence in academic integration and personal development opportunities
for students. As part of this, TPAs: work cooperatively with students to
ensure an environment which displays respect for the rights and privacy of
others; serve as a resource to residential students; support and encourage
students in developing an effective Theme Program Association; administer
and enforce policies and procedures; design and implement educational and
social programs and programs that celebrate the culture of the theme
program and provide opportunities for students to explore their identity
within that culture or program; assist with developing and facilitating
the implementation of an annual seminar; act as mediators in conflict
situations; support and help publicize Academic Services Center programs;
serve as constructive and positive role models; assist with the opening
and closing of the residence halls; create an inclusive environment in
which the entire residence hall can interact and contribute to the theme
program; and promote the values of the Office of Student Development:
Residential Living and New Student Services. RAs receive a single room and

| The Security Coordinator (SC) is responsible for directly supervising the Security Monitor (SM) staff and works closely with other campus resources to maintain and promote safety in the residential community. As a key members of the Health and Safety Team, Security Coordinators will: supervise 20-25 SMs; assist in the coordination and implementation of selection for SMs; assist with the implementation of system wide and unit security staff training; plan and facilitate staff meetings; work cooperatively with students to ensure a building environment which displays respect for the rights and privacy of others; maintain the Security Monitor activity desk; administer and enforce policies and procedures; serve as constructive and positive role models; design and implement safety focused programs; assist with the opening and closing of the residence halls; serve as a resource (particularly in regard to safety and security) to staff and students; and promote the values of the Office of Student Development. | Program Assistant (PA) | How and When to Apply |
| The Program Assistant (PA) is responsible for fostering a comprehensive residential life program that promotes academic success, community development, and transitional support within the residence halls. The Program Assistant's role is diverse and encompasses programming, student leadership, administrative and staff responsibilities. The position requires strong leadership skills in order to accomplish the goals of the Office of Student Development. The Program Assistant will serve as a resource to staff and students and will work with his/her staff to administer and enforce policies and procedures. | Security Monitors (SMs) are student staff who have been hired to uphold safety and security in the residences. Their main responsibilities include monitoring the access of residents and guests into the halls and monitoring the safety of the residential areas. Positions are open at the beginning of fall semester for the academic year, at the beginning of spring semester for spring semester, and mid spring semester for summer and the following academic year. Pay rate: $8.00 per hour. |

| Marketing Supervisor | How and When to Apply |
| The Marketing Supervisor, under the supervision of an Academic Program
Coordinator, is responsible for overseeing the production of all
electronic and print media disseminated by Academic Services. The
Marketing Supervisor is also responsible for the graphic design and layout
of projects for Academic Services, including but not limited to, web page
designs, multimedia presentations, newsletter layouts, trademark creating
and designing other publicity products such as T-shirts, posters, flyers,
etc. Working directly with an Academic Program Coordinator, the Marketing

a Peer Review Board (PRB) member, you will be able to review and evaluate
the behaviors of your peers, and reinforce and clarify community expectations.
Each Residential Unit has a PRB that is active throughout the academic

How and When to Apply |

Selected returning residents form the Student Orientation
Staff (SOS) that help design and initiate programs and activities for
new students during fall Welcome Week and assist with transitional programs
throughout the year. SOS members work with hall staff to coordinate
events intended to welcome students to the residences and assist them
in becoming familiar with their new environment. |

How and When to Apply |

| Two student Health Workers live in every hall and
are available to help you with many health–related needs. They
are trained by University Health Services to provide first aid and CPR,
medical self–care, peer counseling, and health education. They
hold weekly office hours for residents to discuss physical and emotional
health concerns. They also have a thermometer, an ACE bandage, a cold/hot
pack, lots of Bandaids, condoms, and a wide variety of health brochures.
Make sure to meet your Health Workers early in the year so they can
help you make your time at Cal healthy from the start. |

| Residence Hall Government |
| Within the residence halls, there are many opportunities for you to become involved and develop leadership skills. To cover the cost of special events and activities sponsored in the residence halls, $45 per year, paid by you as part of your housing contract is distributed among the Residence Hall Assembly, Hall Associations, and Co–Boards. |

The Residence Hall Assembly (RHA) is the umbrella
organization for the Hall Associations in each building. RHA consists
of representatives from each residence hall and serves as an advocacy
group for student issues. They represent the residents living on campus
to the unit of Residential and Student Service Programs (RSSP) and to
other groups that impact residential life. RHA coordinates many campus-wide
activities and programs, and recommends policy changes to the Office
of Residential and Family Living and RSSP. |

How and When to Apply |

Hall Associations are the student governments in each
residential building. They organize many of the activities for the specific
hall. The activities include films, dances, coffee hours, finals study
breaks, excursions to local points of interest, intramural sports teams,
and cookouts. Each Hall Association elects an executive board for both
the fall and spring semesters. You are encouraged to attend weekly meetings,
share your ideas, and get involved. |

Co–Board (Community Board) is a program planning
body that initiates and implements activities, such as casino night,
dances, ski trips, and boat dances for the entire Unit. Members of Co–Board
