Sutton, Steve - Assistant Vice Chancellor I have been at UC Berkeley since January 2009, returning to the campus where I began my professional career as a Residential Life Coordinator in 1987. During that time away, I worked at universities in Florida and Texas in a variety of student affairs areas, such as student activities, student union management, and I worked as a dean of students, as well. Before returning to Cal, I served as the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. The University of Houston is where I completed my doctorate having studied the retention of students enrolled in web-enhanced classes. I have also been active in the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), having been involved in the Commission for Administrative Leadership and two convention planning teams, as well as other leadership roles. |

Padilla, Je Nell - Assistant Director, Planning & Analysis je_nell@berkeley.edu | (510) 643-2599 After working in a variety of student affairs and teaching positions at institutions in Colorado, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia and California, I was very excited when I had the opportunity in 1999 to join the UC Berkeley campus community. I have never worked at a more exciting campus where I have been fortunate to work directly with students who exemplify the reputation of Cal students as being smart, creative, accomplished, and challenging. It has been my good fortune to work in the area of planning and analysis for the Office of Student Development because of the opportunities to learn about this community and the broader field of higher education. My educational background includes Social Work, Guidance and Counseling, and Educational Psychology. ^ top |

Arao, Brian- Director Residential Programs Greetings! I'm thrilled to be a member of the OSD team at UC Berkeley. The missions of both the division of student affairs and RSSP resonate strongly with my philosophy and values as an educator. My work in residence life at the University of San Francisco, UC Santa Cruz, and New York University have taught me that the residential experience can play a unique role in helping college students to develop into thoughtful, highly engaged, and socially responsible community leaders. In Residential Programs, we strive always to capitalize on this potential. I hold a bachelor's degree in biology from UCSC, a Master's degree in student affairs from the University of Vermont, and am currently pursuing my doctoral studies in international and multicultural education at the University of San Francisco. I live in Oakland with my partner and two very spoiled cats. |

Naranjo, Layla - Director, Incentive Awards Program Hola! My name is Layla Naranjo and I am the Director of the Incentive Awards Program (IAP). My time at U.C. Berkeley started in 1999 (wow, time flies!) as an incoming undergraduate. I majored in Chicano Studies and minored in Spanish. As a low-income, first-generation college student, navigating Cal was often challenging academically and personally. Connecting to the Chicana/Latino Student Development Office not only helped me in my various transitions, but it also gave me the opportunity to work as a Student Group Advisor/Coordinator. This experience exposed me to various positions within a university setting and provided insight into the inner workings of a campus. As a result, I realized that I wanted to pursue a career where I would have the opportunity to make an impact on a student’s college experience as a staff member or later an administrator. |

I am a proud UC Berkeley alumni (Class of 2012!) with a bachelor's degree in Comparative Ethnic Studies. I am committed to be a bridge to future generations of students who aspire towards higher education despite facing socio-economic disadvantages and be a resource to their families throughout the transition from high school to Cal. As a student at Cal, I served as the director of high school outreach for the bridges multicultural resource center where I organized recruitment and outreach efforts in under-represented, low-income communities across the K-12 and community college systems. I had the privilege to serve as program coordinator for the Berkeley Scholars to Cal mentoring program from 2010-2013 and I was selected as the Chancellor's Public Fellow for the American Cultures Engaged Scholarship Program. My experiences at Cal have reaffirmed my responsibility to continue to empower low-income and first-generation college students who are seeking to find a space in higher education to rightfully call their own. ^ top |
