Founded in 1991 in just 12 schools in San Francisco, the Incentive Awards Program (IAP) has grown to be the University of California’s largest privately funded direct service scholarship, recruitment, and support service program for students who succeeded academically in their high school despite severe personal hardships.
Currently, the IAP serves over 250 undergraduates and works closely with 76 public high schools in 12 districts throughout California. The Program distributes $1.8 million in scholarships annually and provides a host of comprehensive resources that help IAP Scholars transition and develop personally, academically, and as leaders in their various communities.
The Incentive Awards Program provides educational and financial access to high-achieving high school students who face socio-economic barriers from underserved communities throughout California. We commit to cultivate future leaders through civic engagement and provide comprehensive, student-centered support services to succeed at UC Berkeley and beyond.
IAP provides many services to help scholars succeed in the college application process as well as at UC Berkeley and beyond.
- Scholarship: Scholars receive up to $32,000 in scholarship funds disbursed over eight semesters. The IAP works closely with the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office to package Scholars and maximize their gift aid.
- High School Support: University Partnerships Officers work closely with high school staff to reach out to students to encourage them to apply to IAP and UC Berkeley as well as provide support throughout the application process.
- Academic Counseling and Programming: 2 Academic Counselors and 1 part-time licensed Psychologist collaborate throughout the year to ensure Scholars are successfully transitioning through the various stages of their UC Berkeley career and beyond.
