The Assessment & Operations branch of the Office of Student Development oversees the assessment, safety & security, psychological well-being, student leadership development, conduct, and administrative functions of the department. (view org chart)This unit serves the residential communities by working directly with students and by providing leadership on many of the services and programs offered by the Residential Programs unit. AssessmentOverall strategic planning relies on determining the most relevant "Best Practices" for the University of California, Berkeley student population, while also being informed by data gathered directly from that population. The American College Personnel Association lists five key characteristics that exemplify a student affairs division committed to student learning. The fifth characteristic is: "Student affairs policies and programs are based on promising practices from the research on student learning and institution-specific assessment data." To that end, this unit reviews daily and quarterly periodicals as well as a variety of other reports on student development theory and best practices in higher education. Institution specific assessment is accomplished through collaborative efforts with colleagues and assessment specialists across campus. Conduct The Office of Student Development has the authority to adjudicate violations of the Residential Conduct Code as outlined in Bear Necessities: The Guide to Living On-Campus. The Center for Student Conduct and Community Standards in the Office of the Dean of Students supports community standards outside the residential communities. In addition to supporting standards and policies at a community level, The Office of Student Development also strives to assure the safety of our residents and the development of our community through a number of other means, which include managing our programs with a special eye on staff training and performance management, and risk reduction practices.
