Residential Programs

Residential Programs brings together professional and student staffs who serve students in their residential communities. Our professional staff has worked in and been trained by some of the best higher education programs in the country, which results in a vibrant blend of student development models and theories. We take seriously the formal and informal role that the residential community plays in each student’s experience at Cal. To that end, our services and programs are informed by such practical models from the field of Student Affairs as Vincent Tinto’s Model of Institutional Departure, which examines the interaction between the characteristics and skills that students bring with them and the social and academic systems of the university. We also never lose sight of the fact that approximately 95% of all incoming freshmen and 33% of incoming transfer students live in the residential communities their first year.

Within the residential communities we offer a variety of residential theme programs. These programs provide a rich opportunity for residents to connect to each other as well as to interested faculty members on common interests, values, and academic endeavors. For more information about applying to live in a theme program, please go to the Theme Programs webpage, or send your questions to theme@berkeley.edu.

The vivacious family housing community called University Village Albany (UVA) is comprised of over 830 families from more than 60 countries. Within the community residents find a diversity of languages, cultures, and lifestyles. The community programs address the health and well-being of the families as well as the academic needs of the student. To that end, day care and after school programs are offered for young children and special teen programs are designed to provide educational & cultural outlets for community teens. Social groups and events are developed in response to community needs and residents are encouraged to take leadership roles within the community.

Academic support services are provided for residential students in the Academic Centers located in each residential unit and UVA. All programs and services are evaluated by residents on a regular basis in order to insure that the Centers are a dynamic and relevant part of the learning communities in the residences.

The Community Development & Inclusion program supports Cal students by developing programs and services to increase students’ sense of belonging and satisfaction with their first year experience. One way we do this is by promoting social justice and intercultural relations between students living in the residential communities. This program along with many campus partners promotes a sense of welcome, well-being, and safety within the Cal community.

The Resident Faculty program allows UC Berkeley tenure-track faculty to integrate themselves into student life and provide support by living in the residence halls among the students. While the program promotes academic achievement, faculty members also create an inclusive and comfortable community that encourages personal growth and development.
